Binnen NL ontwikkelt TMLO zich als de standaard metadata profiel voor de lokale overheden. Wellicht ook een goede leidraad voor andere instellingen/organisatie die hiermee bezig zijn.

In NL heeft DiVault een nationaal e-depot ontwikkeld obv OAIS/TMLO, OpenSource en eigen Infrastructuur, waarbij veel aandacht is voor het beschikbaar stellen van gearchiveerde digitale informatie.

Bedankt Wilko voor de inspiratie. Ik heb hem toegevoegd aan mijn agenda na Business Bootcamp. Ik ga dit nu als vast agendapunt vasthouden aangezien het volgens mij veel oplevert. South Australia is not the only state without a digital archive in Australia. In fact the two state jurisdictions which featured in the presentations (NSW, Victoria) are the only two states which do have a digital archive. None of the others (Queensland, ACT, Tasmania, NT, Western Australia) have advanced beyond the planning stages.

Hi Paul!
It is true that a Migration has many risks.
Our PDFs, however, have more problems than only the non-valid/not well-formed stuff. We are dealing with lots of not-embedded fonts, for example. It would not feel comfortable for me to leave it all just as it is, now. Of course, we will always preserve the original as well, just to be sure.

In a follow up twitter conversation with Gary McGath (JHOVE author), Gary was eager to note that JHOVE has a blind spot as regards PDF1.7. This could have serious implications for workflows dependent on JHOVE!

Interesting poster from Yvonne. I'm not convinced however that if a PDF file is not valid and/or well formed it necessarily needs to be migrated/re-constructed. There are risks associated with aspects of some PDFs but they don't necessarily align with divergence from the PDF spec.

Migration is a very serious undertaking as it can seriously damage a file in unexpected ways, unless very thorough quality checks are applied. I'd suggest that migration should only be undertaken as a last resort when accessibility is clearly threatened. My personal take is that putting all your eggs in one basket (however well padded that basket may be) is asking for trouble. As always however, getting the right solution is a trade off between risk and cost...

Thanks for the review, many good points. As for the issue of creating a local copy of your own content and / or sync to a third party cloud provider, these are both in the pipeline and will be added soon - Paul, I hope that answers your point. Also, you can create and download collection packages any time you want.Amazon's S3 service is amazingly durable with multiple copies held in separate locations and seamless bit rot healing. The issue in 2009 you point of was of their EC2 short term store which we don't rely on for long term storage. The launch instance is US hosted for US customers or those that don't care where the content is. The next instance will be hosted in the EU (Ireland) which is operated by the EU subsidiary of Amazon. No data will be replicated outside the EU unless the customer wants it to.Hope this helpsJon Tilbury (Tessella)

Nice post Jeffrey. I'm surprised Tessella don't offer the ability to replicate to another cloud provider. Clearly that increases the cost, but this appears to be a bit of a deal breaker otherwise...
